The following morning over a late breakfast in the kitchen, Sam dissected the previous night’s events with Eve, and despite herself she couldn’t help but eventually steer the conversation round to Anna and Ronan.
She was dying to find out more about their history, on two counts – one, because she was certain Anna really wasn’t the right person for Ronan, and secondly because she wanted to figure out how Liam fitted into the picture
“So, how long have they been together?” she asked Eve, who was pouring them another cup of coffee.
The party had been a late one, and Liam and the kids were still in bed. Even the usually animated Max had been knocked out after all the celebrations or more likely, Sam thought wryly, after all the party food he’d gobbled the night before.
“Anna and Ronan?” Eve replied. “Donkey’s years, really. “ She sat back down beside Sam at the kitchen table. “I think I told you before that they lived right next-door to one another, and have been together ever since.”
“And Liam knew them too, you said?”
“Yes, but he and Noreen didn’t move into the area until much later – when they were teenagers, I think. Liam was going through a hard time – his parents had just separated, and his mother had uprooted him from everything he knew, his school, his friends everything. He and Ronan hit it off immediately. They were in the same class in school, I think.”
“And Anna too?”
“Anna what?”
“Did Anna hit it off with Liam too?”
“Well, I’m not really sure. I suppose she got to know him as a friend of Ronan’s really,” Eve replied. “Anyway, why are you so interested in Anna and Ronan? This isn’t the first time you’ve quizzed me up about them and . . . Sam?” She sat up in her chair, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. “Sam, why are you blushing? What the hell is going on?”
Sam was caught. Obviously she didn’t want Eve to think anything untoward about Anna and Liam, so now she had no choice but to tell her sister the truth. And in all honesty, she needed to tell her, to tell somebody about the strong and very odd feelings she experienced whenever Ronan was around.
“Sam?” Eve prompted, her tone sharp. “I asked you what was going on.”
Sam took a deep breath before answering. “I’m not sure, to be honest. I think . . . I mean, I know this is stupid and kind of pathetic, but well . . . I think I’ve fallen for Ronan.” She looked away quickly, unsure what to say next.
Eve’s eyes nearly popped out of her head. “What? What do you mean you think you’ve fallen for Ronan? You barely know him, for goodness’s sake!”
“I know,” Sam’s voice was plaintive. “Believe me, I’m just as perplexed as you are. But there’s something about him, Eve – something that I can’t explain. From the very first moment I met him . . .” She went on to tell Eve
